A 3 year old’s view on having nothing.

Just wanted to share a conversation I had with my children recently…

CAST OF CHARACTERS –

Phoebe – 6 years old

Zane – 3 years old

and ME!

PHOEBE: Why do those kids get all our toys?

ME: Because the floods came and took away all the kids toys, and they don’t have any left.

PHOEBE: All their toys? What about their dogs?

ZANE: How ‘bout the lollies?

ME: Yes, all their toys, their dogs, their lollies, their tables and chairs, their food, everything

ZANE: How ‘bout the lollies?

ME: Yes, Zane. All their lollies as well.

PHOEBE: Maybe we should sell them a bed?

ME: They need someone to buy their beds for them, because they don’t have anything left.

ZANE: How ‘bout the lollies?

ME: That’s right Zane, all their lollies are gone too.

PHOEBE: Maybe we could buy them some more money?

ME: Mummy and Daddy gave them some money to buy new beds, and new food… and you gave them some toys so they wont miss their toys so much.

ZANE: How ‘bout their lollies?

ME: Yes Zane, they miss their lollies.

PHOEBE: But I’m going to miss Rabbit.

ME: I know, and so it’s very special that you gave it to the kids who have no toys, because think about how it would feel if a flood came and took away all your toys –

ZANE: And lollies

ME: – yes, and lollies. If the flood came and took away all your toys (turn to Zane) and lollies (turn back to Phoebe) how would you feel? Would it make you happier if someone gave you some of their toys?

ZANE: How ‘bout lollies?

ME: And lollies… would that make you happier?

PHOEBE: Yes. But the floods can’t come up the hill, they wont get my toys.

ZANE: And my lollies.

ME: That’s all the more reason to give some of your toys to the kids who the flood did affect.

ZANE: How ‘bout lollies?

ME: and we can give them some lollies too…
